As you are probably aware, the Australian Industrial Relations Commission (AIRC) has been charged with the job of creating a new system of modern awards. When they commence, modern awards will be more important for most businesses than awards have been over the recent past.
The key objective of award modernisation is to reduce the number of awards in the system, by creating awards with national coverage across industry and occupational lines which will replace federal awards and NAPSAs.
The new system of modern awards will come into effect in time for the commencement of the Federal Government’s new workplace relations system on 1 January 2010. Between now and then the AIRC will progressively create and publish modern awards, starting with 14 priority industries:
